ChemFlashcards is a research-based web app for practising IUPAC and common chemical nomenclature using spaced retrieval practice. This is one of the most effective learning strategies in cognitive science.

Join the Study
Participate in a research study comparing spaced vs. massed practice for chemistry nomenclature. Sessions are short (about 6 to 8 minutes each), fully online, and compensated.

Why spaced retrieval practice?
Spaced retrieval practice (SRP) is the technique of actively recalling information across multiple, distributed sessions. This study method has been shown to produce stronger and more durable learning than massed practice (more commonly known as "cramming"). This study investigates how SRP applies to IUPAC and common chemical nomenclature, a foundational skill for chemistry students.
The study is conducted by the QCER Lab in the Department of Chemistry at Queen's University, under the supervision of Dr. Amanda Bongers.
